René Descartes

Father of Western Philosophy

René Descartes (1596–1650) was a french philosopher, scientist, and mathematician, who was a major figure in the scientific revolution. He was the first to take skepticism to its logical limit, in doing so shaping the basic form of our modern theory of knowledge. He invented coordinate geometry (a plane with an x-y axis allowing the marriage of geometry and algebra), paving the way for the invention of calculus.
