Richard Nixon

United States President 1969-1974

Richard Nixon was the President of the United States from 1969 to 1974. While initially escalating the US involvement in the Vietnam, he was responsible for negotiating the lasting peace with Vietnam. He also moved the US dollar from being tied to gold to a floating currency; the repercussions became dubbed the "Nixon Shock". A little over a year into his second term, he was forced to resign after the Watergate scandal.

Richard Nixon's Opinions

Agree
I propose the establishment of a central authority [to become the Drug Enforcement Agency] with overall responsibility for all major Federal drug abuse prevention, education, treatment, rehabilitation, training, and research programs in all Federal agencies. ... Because this is an emergency response to a national problem which we intend to bring under control, the Office [will] operate only for a period of 3 years [with the option of] extending its life for an additional 2 years if desirable.

Agree
If we cannot destroy the drug menace in America, then it will surely in time destroy us. I am not prepared to accept this alternative. Therefore, I am transmitting legislation to the Congress to consolidate at the highest level a full-scale attack on the problem of drug abuse in America.
