The Armchair Psychologist Pitch

Pitch Type:  Narrative

The Armchair Psychologist Pitch provides an insight into someone's underlying psychology from intuition, often from a distance, and without backing up their claims with formal theories or studies in psychology. The insight may be quite correct, but the listener may forget to question its correctness if the insight is eloquent or agreeable.

What's a Pitch?

A pitch is a label for a commonly used argument or persuasion strategy.

...the only thing Michael was guilty of in my opinion, was naivete. While cuddling in the bed with children isn't technically illegal, it does violate several social norms; norms that a man who [...] refers to himself as “Peter Pan” would certainly pay a higher price for breaking. ...laying in bed with those children, watching movies, tickling, and engaging in general horseplay, sounds less like the work of a pedophile and more like the actions of a man trying to experience a [lost] childhood.

There is no privileged center, no soul, no place where it all comes together—aside from the brain itself. ... I have come to realize over the years that the hidden agenda for most people concerned about consciousness and the brain (and evolution, and artificial intelligence) is a worry that unless there is a bit of us that is somehow different, and mysteriously insulated from the material world, we can’t have free will—and then life will have no meaning.

Men’s rights activists—a loose coalition mostly comprised of men embittered that they’re not getting as much tail as they believe they’re due and men embittered after having their wives up and leave against their wishes—irritate feminist bloggers for many reasons, from blaming feminists for problems they clearly brought on themselves, to the Russian bride weirdness, to their dogged trolling and grudge-holding of feminists that criticize them.

There is nothing to study in the mind of Norway’s mass killer. ... It is not enough to say he is mad. Anders Breivik is patently mad: no one in their right mind would behave as he has done. ... My friends, there is no easy way of saying this: a lot of what this evil nutcase says could be drawn from the blog-post threads that you will find in the media, especially the “conservative” media, in Britain. ... It was all about him, and his feeling of inadequacy in relation to the female sex.
