The Convert Pitch

Pitch Type:  Credibility

The Convert Pitch is used by someone who once used to believe what you do but and has not only come around, but believes that you will too. They often have an "I've Been There" story, and firmly believe that their personal experience is the golden template for everyone else's.

What's a Pitch?

A pitch is a label for a commonly used argument or persuasion strategy.

David Attenborough    Botanist, Writer, Nature Documentarian
I'm no longer sceptical. Now I do not have any doubt at all. I think climate change is the major challenge facing the world. I have waited until the proof was conclusive that it was humanity changing the climate. The thing that really convinced me was the graphs connecting the increase of carbon dioxide in the environment and the rise in temperature, with the growth of human population and industrialisation.

Twenty years ago, as a PhD scientist, I intensely studied the evolution versus intelligent design controversy for about two years. And finally, despite my previous acceptance of evolutionary theory as "fact," I came to the realization that intelligent design, as a theory of origins, is no more religious, and no less scientific, than evolutionism.

The recent resurgence of funding for parapsychology means there are several new labs and many new researchers at work. If psi does exist then one day one of them will find a way to demonstrate it and a theory to explain it. If that happens I shall be back like a shot, but until then, happily, I have given up.

I am, by nature, an optimist. ... My optimism, however, has not always served me well. Twice I have been hit by cars [while cycling] that were entirely the result of my blissful attitude that the street corners I had successfully negotiated hundreds of times before would not suddenly materialize an automobile in my path. ...feelings — both positive and negative — too often trump reason. In the end, reality must take precedence over fantasy, regardless of how it makes us feel.

When I started my experiments I was for GM foods. But after what they did to me, my sympathies are with people campaigning against GM foods. ...adequate studies have not been done. Because the companies when they released these things never tested them properly [for] potential hazards... It does not mean that, by definition, it must occur in nature, but it might occur. With irreversible GM technology this becomes even more important because you have no chance of having a remedy.

Imagine a world in which each of us has a special inner core - a ‘real self’ - that makes us who we are, that can think and move independently of our coarse physical body, and that ultimately survives death, giving meaning to our otherwise short and pointless lives. This is (roughly speaking) how most people think the world is. It is how I used to think -and even hope - that the world is. I devoted 25 years of my life to trying to find out whether it is. Now I have given up.

John McCain    U.S. Senator, Republican
I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company [whilst in solitary confinement in a POW camp].

Michelle Obama    First Lady of United States
For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues. It has made me proud.

Susan Blackmore    Psychology Lecturer, Former Parapsychologist
I spent twenty-five years of my life as a parapsychologist, hunting for, and never finding, such paranormal phenomena as telepathy, clairvoyance, ghosts and premonitions.
Context: Do ghosts exist?

Sandra Bullock    Actress
I used to be an optimist, but now I know that nothing is going to turn out as I expect — although often it is better.

Richard Dawkins    Evolutionary Biologist, Writer, Atheism Activist
I was one of those who had unthinkingly bought into the hectoring myth that science can say nothing about morals. To my surprise, The Moral Landscape has changed all that for me. It should change it for philosophers too. Philosophers of mind have already discovered that they can’t duck the study of neuroscience, and the best of them have raised their game as a result. Sam Harris shows that the same should be true of moral philosophers, and it will turn their world exhilaratingly upside down.

I am a scientist who was on the carbon gravy train, understands the evidence, was once an alarmist, but am now a skeptic. The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of the recent global warming is based on a guess that was proved false by empirical evidence during the 1990s... In science, empirical evidence always trumps theory, no matter how much you are in love with the theory.
