Is Barack Obama a Muslim?

The religious beliefs of the candidates were heavily scrutinized in the US presidential race of 2008. A survey by Pew Research Center in July 2008 found that "12% of Americans continue to say Barack Obama is Muslim, virtually unchanged from 10% in March. This misperception is not limited to voters who oppose Obama. Identical percentages of Republicans and Democrats (12% each) think he is Muslim".

There is nothing to base that on as far as I know.

He is not a Muslim, he's [always been] a Christian. ... But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, "He's a Muslim and he might be associated terrorists." This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

His father was a muslim, therefore he is a muslim, or if not, an apostate. In the eyes of most muslims, he is a muslim.

His grandfather converted to Islam. His father abandoned Islam and was an atheist later in life. He himself was raised Christian and goes to church regularly. If you have some idea that the bloodline is the only thing that matters, then his grandfather was an apostate in the first place, as was his father.
