Is a tan healthy?

Conventional wisdom is that tanning increases the risk of skin cancer, and that sunscreen should be used to reduce that risk. However, some skeptics have suggested that sunscreen contains carcinogens, and have doubted that the link between exposure to ultraviolet radiation and skin cancer. Others have pointed to the benefits of Vitamin D production from sunlight exposure, but this can be achieved before a tan is attained.

The dermatologists, the sunscreen and cosmetic industries have tried to say that somehow moderate tanning causes melanoma, which is just not true. While our campaign will be controversial, it's time people learned the truth about sun exposure. Not only is moderate tanning completely safe, more and more it's becoming just what the doctor ordered.

If you can't avoid being in the sun, use a sunscreen to help protect your skin while you are in the sun. Use a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or higher. Sunscreens that say "broad-spectrum" can protect the skin from ultraviolet A and B (UVA and UVB) rays.
