Are polygraphs reliable?

Polygraphs work by measuring crude physiological responses such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and sweat, with the assumption that particular patterns are indicative of lying. Critics argue that guilty people are able to cheat the tests and that innocent people often fail due to factors such as nervousness which are indistinguishable in the test from guilt.
